Glossary of Terms

Common terms, phrases, or things commonly referenced throughout The Four Realms.

  • Near sentient magical construct borne of Life and Aether.

  • Rare material used to hunt and kill immortal and ethereal creatures. Pure bloodstone no longer exists within Eldoterra.

  • Ability often used by the gods. Used to enact their will upon a living or ethereal creature.

  • An agreement signed in blood between a demon and another creature (e.g., human, demon, fae, etc.). Terms enforced by blood magic.

  • General term used to describe creatures of the hells.

  • Visual indicator a mortal has entered into contract with a demon. Typically a synopsis of the contract terms in Malbolge.

  • “Light take your enemies, and shadows keep you safe.”

    A sentiment often spoken in the hells to demonstrate comradery between demons.

    Over the eons, the adage has changed. The original sentiment references the elders.

    “May Light and Life lead those in your path to Chaos, and may Death and Darkness hold you to the laws of Order.”

  • Colloquial term/title regarding the primordials.

  • Fabled tree that takes root and blooms in times of great change. Heralds the arrival of Chaos.

  • A soul that has been left far too long in the veil. The greater amounts of Aether and Nether in the realm tend to warp the soul, resulting in ethereal creatures such as Death Knights, Wraiths, and Ghasts.

  • The ability to transport oneself or others from one point to another using innate magic.

    Ability to travel greater distances between points is determined by the strength of the innate. It is not uncommon for individuals to ferry multiple times to reach their final destination—especially with cross-continental travel.

  • Blood magic activated doorway between two fixed points.

  • Patriarch or Matriarch led collective of demons or dark fae.

  • Item description
  • The mate/partner of a House Patriarch or Matriarch.

  • The sole leader of a demonic or Cerwiden House. In the hells, House Matriarchs do not exist.

  • Magic ability granted by the soul and/or the gods. Manifestation is often influenced by bloodline. Intensity or strength of the ability is determined by the strength of the soul.

    Fae are more likely to manifest an innate versus their human counterparts, but it is possible for humans to possess a magical ability.

  • Individual capable of using their innate ability in tandem with old magic wards to create art.

  • The language of the hells. Commonly used by demons, undead, Cerwidens, bloodmancers, and necromancers. Also used by High Priests of Sacrarium Mortis.

  • General term used to describe creatures of the heavens.

  • A contraption of obsidian and blood magic. Used to secure cursed objects, house damned entities, and trap ethereal creatures.

  • Borne of Aether. The first magic to be wielded by mortals. With the evolution of innate magic, old magic practice has greatly receded.

  • The collective body of the gods.

  • Eleven interconnected ancient and powerful entities responsible for the creation of the realms and all forms of life.

  • Language of the elders.

  • Physical marking upon Nektos-chosen mates who have undergone the Joining.

  • Crystallized errant soul.

  • Necromantic abomination in which a soul is placed in the deceased flesh of a human or fae. Borne of Death and Nether.

  • Construct of Aether, typically found in the veil. Viewed as a bad omen.

  • The language of the heavens. Commonly used by nyraphim, Life Bringers, and High Priestesses/Priests of various gods.
